There are many arguments supporting GMOs which explain why they are safe. The main points in support of GMOs are:

  • The use of GM Crops results in an increased yield of crops, which has contributed to the fact that American agriculture is the only American enterprise that consistently shows an international positive balance of payments from exports.

  • In 1998 around 1000 tonnes less insecticide was used in the US cotton belt than before the introduction of GM cotton.

  • Between 1996 and 2011, the use of insecticide has decreased by 26 percent.

  • Genetically-engineered crops require less space to produce the same yield, which results in more space for wildlife, and also require less soil cultivation, meaning less soil erosion.

  • There have been over 1,700 scientific studies done that show the safety of GM crops.

  • By the year 2040, the world's population is projected to increase by 2 billion to nearly 9 billion people.  Global Experts project that to keep up with the growing population we will need at least 50 percent more food, 45 percent more energy and 30 percent more water. The use of GM crops can help by strengthening crops against drought and extreme temperature, delivering more nutritious food, increasing productivity, and requiring less energy.

  • There are over 2,000 studies that prove the safety of GM crops, showing that they are "substantially equivalent to their conventional counterparts or substantially equivalent except for a limited number of defined differences (often the expression of one or small number of new proteins)."
