Editing in Modern Zombie Films

  • In more recent years, zombie films have incorporated both continuity and discontinuity editing elements in order to achieve the specific level and type of horror or suspense desired.

  • Three additional fundamental elements used by filmmakers in the modern day horror films including the zombie subgenre include color, sound, and perspective.

  • Recent zombie films such as Zombieland utilize discontinuity editing techniques, like nondiegetic elements and montages, as well as continuity techiques such as establishing/re-establishing shots and the eyeline match.

The screen shots to the right represent nondiegetic elements such as subtitles in the first shot, on-screen text in the second and third shot, and lastly, voice over narration in the final shot.
